Cultural and Spiritual Practices

Kackaamin is grounded in Nuu-chah-nulth teachings, values, and ways of being. Our programs weave together western therapeutic approaches and Indigenous cultural practices to be not two separate tracks, but as one integrated path.

At the heart of this is a principle that guides everything we do

everything is one

Drop a pebble into a body of water and the whole surface ripples. As people, we are not separate from each other, from our families, or from the land. Healing one part of us means tending to all parts. That is why Kackaamin works with the whole family and not just the individual and why culture, ceremony, and connection are built into every program we offer.

Practices and ceremonies

Throughout our programs, participants may take part in:

Cleansing Ceremonies — used to release what no longer serves and create space for what's coming.

Smudging — the burning of sacred medicines to clear energy, offer prayer, and bring calm.

The Talking Circle — a space where everyone's voice holds equal weight, and listening is as important as speaking.

Spiritual Baths — a practice of purification and renewal.

Sweat Lodge — a ceremony of prayer, heat, and collective intention.

Sacred Fire — tended with care and purpose, fire is used in ceremony and as a space for reflection and release.

We primarily practice Nuu-chah-nulth traditions and teachings. We also recognize that families come to us from many nations, each with their own protocols and cultural knowledge. We encourage every family to bring and maintain their own traditions here.
